Debra Lawless and William May, both of Fieldale, had an agreement. They would both buy tickets in the Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle, and if one of them won, they would split the prize. And that’s exactly what happened!
Ms. Lawless was taking down her Christmas tree when her brother called to say one of their tickets won $25,000. “I was in shock,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.
She bought the ticket, #103297, at Steve’s Ezee In, located at 2575 Virginia Avenue in Collinsville.
It was one of six $25,000 winning tickets in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle – and one of two bought in Collinsville. The others were bought in Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Radford and Jarratt. Three tickets won the top prize of $1 million each. Those tickets were purchased in Yorktown, Richmond and Burke. An additional 300 tickets each won $500. A total of 330,000 tickets were printed for the raffle.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 7 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
