MAN PAYS EXTRA $1; WINS ADDITIONAL $20,000
When Karl Robertson of Fincastle won $30,000 in the February 17, 2010, Powerball drawing, it was a first for Virginia. He was the first big winner who increased his prize by adding Power Play. By spending the extra $1 for Power Play when he bought his ticket, Mr. Robertson turned a $10,000 prize for matching four numbers plus the Power Ball into $30,000.
“When I looked at the numbers, I thought, ‘Well, I won $10,000. That’s great,’” Mr. Robertson later told Virginia Lottery officials. What he did not realize is, because the multiplier for that drawing was 3, all Power Play prizes were tripled.
He bought his ticket at Happy Food Mart at 8216 Roanoke Road in Fincastle. The winning numbers were 7-8-19-26-36 and the Powerball was 15. He selected the numbers on his ticket using his children’s ages and birthdays.
As with all Virginia Lottery games, every Powerball ticket bought in Virginia helps raise funds for K-12 public education in the Commonwealth. Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. Powerball drawings are broadcast on TV stations across Virginia and live on www.valottery.com. For more information on Powerball, visit www.powerball.com.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 7 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
